Best Answer. Copy. When facing the engine compartment from the rear of the vehicle the number one cylinder is located on the right and furthest forward. The number 4 cylinder is located to the
The odd-numbered cylinders are on the left side of the engine and the even-numbered cylinders are on the right side. The firing order is determined by the order in which the spark plugs are fired. The first spark plug is fired at cylinder number one, the second spark plug is fired at cylinder number three, and so on.
There are 8 cylinders in the Ford 5.4-liter V8 engine. Their numbering starts from 1 to 8 in a specific order according to their location. Cylinder # 1 is on the passenger side bank in front of the engine closest to the radiator. The next one in the sequence is cylinder #2, then #3, and the last one the farthest is #4 on the same bank. On a four-cylinder engine, cylinder number one is usually the first cylinder closest to the timing belt or chain side of the engine. It is typically labeled with a "1" on the distributor cap. On a six-cylinder or eight-cylinder engine, refer to the vehicle's manual or repair manual to determine the cylinder number one location.
In a 4 cylinder engine, cylinders are arranged orderly and numbered from 1 to 4, that is 1-2-3-4. The numbering is usually indicated on the engine’s front part and near drive accessories. When you view the engine cylinder chamber, the frontest cylinder is always 1, followed by 2, 3, and 4.
Thread starter. #2. Just for the record, the above diagram is correct for cylinder numbering. I didn't verify the firing order. The gap and plug torque #s are wrong. Gap is 0.44 (Denso plugs are pregapped so you shouldn't need to actually gap them and the tip is very fragile so be careful checking) and plug torque is 15 ft-lb for LC.

I switched the coil pacs on what I believe are the # 1 and #2 cylinders to see if the code would move also. The code stayed off for about 600 miles but returned as the same PO301. Before replacing the one plug I want to be sure I have identified the correct plug. How are the cylinders numbered while facing the engine from left to right.
